I haul a cord of firewood in my 83 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 truck and one cord in a trailer. As I move the truck\trailer ahead slowly from a standstill to get up to highway speed I hear a groaning shudder until I am over 20-30 kph. My rear diff seems good and my np208 transfer case and th400 crossmember mounts are in good condition. I forgot to check motor mounts. I wonder if a motor mount could be the culprit. I dont feel it when unloaded.

Hi:

Standard or automatic? Clutch slipping?

Remember, you are trying to move over 6 ton of weight.

Automatic TH400 tranny. I been using my transfer case in 4 low to go up the hills on the forest service rd and it doesnt shudder or groan in 4low. I have the hubs unlocked since rd is gravel and no snow yet. Simply using mechanical advantage of 4 low so my V8 305 doesnt have to work so hard. My 305 seems really low on power compared to last fall so thinking I may have a couple spark plugs not firing on lower rpm or not firing at all. Thinking pull the plugs and see how they look. Maybe truck shudder accelerating from a stand still in 2high is the problem?

Im thinking its shuddering and the groan is simply the engine not wanting to rev out

Hi:

If the problem is not there in 4 low then it implies to me that something is slipping. Is this a do a partial load, move truck and trailer, load some more, move again, repeat until full then leave, or do full load then leave? Trying to figure out when the truck starts having issues.

My truck does this when loaded and shifting. Auto trans is just getting old and wore out. It does help to keep it topped up with good auto trans fluid.

Sounds like the clutch packs are worn and slipping in the trans

Sounds like you might be lugging the engine.
