have a 1950 RTU that has been in dry storage, and I hadn't run it for probably 10 years. Got it going again this weekend, but the hydraulic system is not responding. I haven't checked it yet, but am guessing it is low on fluid. I seem to remember using a red hydraulic fluid for this purpose years ago? Can't seem to find a specified product in my manuals. ATF work or no?

All MM hydraulics used a basic hydraulic fluid.(AW 32) In 60's we used out of MM gallon cans. Red ATF was only used in power
steering.

yes it will work. but for steady every day use it does not have the same lubrication quality's. hydraulic oil is for what it say's and so
is auto trans and so is power steering oil. u can use each one in any of the above if you were out stranded in the bush with no other way
to get home. even engine oil will get you going. years ago a guy lost his auto trans oil with a leak . so he dumped gear oil in to get
home. got him home. lol.

A couple thoughts: Check your engine oil. If it is over full it probably has hydraulic fluid in it and your pump is leaking hydraulic fluid
into the engine.

The other thing is I filled my BG with less than 2 gallons of Dextron 3. (less than 8 liters.) And since an R would have the same reservoir,
pump and cylinder, it should hold nearly the same amount of fluid except for the hoses will be longer.

We had enough lettered MMs to spell words and all we ever used was ATF.
