After getting some great advise from the people here and looking at a lot of pictures. I decided to go with the red color. Here are some pictures of my progress. There is still a lot of work, but it is coming along.

Everything on the tractor was red from the factory
Except for the tires(black) wheel rims were galvanized but restorers use a semi gloss aluminum, or they have them dipped in galvanized coating
the magneto was partially red partially aluminum and cap was black as were the spark plug wires
O.K. the original seat cover canvas was also aluminum coloured
I am working on one

I'm going to guess if it is a new manifold, they probably painted it black for rust reasons. Unless you like a real crappy look black is cheaper in some cases and looks better if the paint is burning off than red would.

The manifold was cast and had some red paint from over spray on the 1947 B and the 48 M when they were new and no black seats

My antique tractor club would like to know how rare a Farmall 504 diesel Hi-clearance tractor is? Any opinions appreciated.

Carb colors gees , haw what every ya want and what ever trips your trigger . Paint it PLUM CRAZY and give them something to talk about . We are I H lovers NOT John Deere people . Back in 94 i had my S/MTA at the Red power Round up at Hookstown Pa My tractor was on year 4 of the repaint and my forth year of ownership . I bought that tractor June 27th 1990 , not as a collector tractor but as my second tractor to USE as a tractor in my massive HOBBY farming operation . When i Bought it two of the three lights worked , it charged and still 6 volt system had a ugly I H loader on it with a blade to scrap HOG MANURE and was covered in it and a good T/A but NO brakes . I fixed the mechanical stuff and my buddy painted it along with like 12-14 other tractors at that show . Mine was painted with I H 2150 red from the local I H store at a cost of 27.50 a gallon with a splash of DuPont 77 S hardner added . There were a total of 54 1954 S/MTA's at that show . Tow made the Video Mine was one of them . I think my carb was masked off and was left CRUD color . I am old enough to remember when the one dealer bought a new wide ft. S/MTA out to my uncles for a week demo during tater harvest and it was put on the two row John Deere Tater digger as back then the bushel basket was the means of getting taters off the field . In my time on this rock i have seen all the new I H tractors since the S/Mta and ya know what what the correct CARB color was i can not say . I can tell ya the correct seat color was silver with a brass grommet in the center of the seat pan .
