Just a couple quick questions for when the new forum software becomes available:

1. Will the "edit" feature work in Tales also? There's a thread up there right now dealing with that. It would be nice to be able to correct our typos in that forum also.

2. On another forum I belong to, it is set up so that, if I read a thread yesterday, and then come back today and click on it again, it will automatically take me down to the newest posts, so I don't have to read through the entire thread again. (Hope that made sense). That would be a good feature to have here also.

Just throwing that out there. Can't wait for the new set up to be put in place!

Yes to all and far more. The new software will have virtually every feature that you see in modern social media and forums. It's actually easy to find all the expected features. The only thing that is harder to find is the threading such as classic has. Other features that are very helpful is that many of the YT informational pages will be able to be included in the forum. Certainly things like the blog will get a restart and be incorporated directly in.

When we get the prototype up, I will be contacting you and others who've provided such good input on new things I've added in the existing software.

I did hear this week that the new servers will be available in about 2 months. I would like to have the forum prototype done by then. I'm not sure about the networking components so going live may be farther out.

It's our intention to move as much of the site into the new software and make it more generally supportable and reliable.

That threading that classic has is what I like, I do not like
the way that modern jumps all around and cannot follow
anything. And if I clicl to modern and it only comes up with
part of the posts on classic. Says there is 2 or 3 pages but
only one shows up.

The threading is our highest priority and we believe the forum software we've recommended can do it.

On other forums I belong to, there is a reply box below the most recent post where you type your response. There is not a reply button on each post. This is not generally a problem, since the posts are in order, and 90% of the time people are responding to the most recent post anyway. To reply to a specific post, you just use the "quote" button. Simple as that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Chris, but it seems that the "jumping around" that Leroy is referring to on the current modern view is due to the two views trying to coordinate with each other, and should no longer be an issue when there is only one view, correct?

I'm not sure. I can say that the time lag between the two could give that perception. The occasional post that breaks loose because of that subject length issue could also do this. Lastly, just how modern threads to classic could give that impression. If people hit the reply at the top to respond to someone further down, it will thread in oddly and create a disjointed discussion.

I can't speak to how the replies will work until have something to actually customize and test with. What I've seen with the most advanced forums, is that there is a reply link associated with each post. By using that, it links the reply to that post and sends a notification to the one who posted the message replied to. I've also seen the @username syntax used in this so the person being replied to is highlighted in the reply post. Quoting can usually be pulled from several posts which then can make a single post reply to many other posts. We'll be able to get specific when we have something to work with.

When Modern shows as having more than 1 page, do you click on the 2, or next, to advance to the next page? Modern does not automatically advance to the next page; you have to do that.

Yes, either next or the page number. The new forums will load a page and as you scroll down, will load more of the thread until you reach the end. Kind a mix between the two views.

Do you know of a currently active forum website using the forum type you are looking at using?

Would like to go to it and just look around.

We'll announce it just as soon as we can get the prototype up for those of you who are very interested (and hopefully get as many in to look at it as we can). I don't want to go too far saying we're using such and such though, until I get approval to proceed with the prototype. Until I have that, I can't even honestly say which package it will be.

Also, because of the level of customization you can do on upper end forum software, YT will look more like YT (albeit with a surprisingly large number of features) than it will a site running the same basic package. The idea is to make a really good threaded view, which by pressing a button, you're suddenly looking at it in a chronological view.

There is also the issue that we don't know, for sure, we can do that view concept on any package until we can play with it and mock it up. As soon as the test server is up, we'll be able to start working with it. If the first package won't do the specific thing the community requires, then we'll move onto the next until we find the one that will.
