John Deere 2 bottom plow Model 44

Do you think these shares could be repaired? Since I can still make out the part numbers on back I dont think they have ever been worked on by a blacksmith. I'm unable to find new ones. Photo attached. Text on back says deerebca 214

I have never hammered a share out, but I have taken some blacksmith type shares and welded a throwaway share on top of them and had OK results. That might be an option for you if yours are too far gone and you can't find replacements.

I have a #44 plow. Bought my last ones from John Deere dealer. Price wasn't too bad.

214 is a common number share and try Ploworks and there is anouther poster
on here that has plow parts, cannot think of name now. Just go back thru
all posts and you will find places to get new shares. And they could be
repaired with throw away shares also. Sounds like your plow is set for 12
inch furrows. I had a 44 plow as well as a 55ABH and No 52 plows And that
214 was the number for some of them.

The 44 DID use the blacksmith sharpen type of share, The throw away type did not come till the next model. But all plows could have been converted to the throw away type of share. My 44 DID have the blacksmith type of share.

Thanks for info. Locally there are lots of welders but no blacksmith. You know someone who would let me mail these to them and them send them back after done? Thanks, Chris

Too far gone for a blacksmith to do anything with, not enough steel left to
work with. Only way to fix is fit and lay a throw away on top and weld it
on. Would work but not as good as a new share would work. Try the plow parts
dealers.

If I was standing next to a welder I could guide him thru repairing the shares but even if I still had the tools I could no longer do the work.

Do you have a welder? If so, you can lay a throwaway share on top like others have said and weld it on. It is pretty simple, you just want to weld it on in a way that the geometry of the point is the same as it would be with a new or resharpened share, and so it is oriented the same in relation to the moldboard. Done properly it will work just was well as a factory share, although it won't last as long.

BCA214 is a 10" share for an EP bottom. I would suggest looking for a 347 or 372 share also, which are 12" and 14" shares. They might/probably need some modifying to bolt up but at least they would fit and have the correct shape and curvature. The EP was a different bottom in that it used the exact same moldboard whether it was considered a 10", 12", or 14" bottom. 12" and 14" shares readily interchange. The 10", I'm not sure. The parts book shows a different "frame", which the draw bolt goes through, for the 10" bottom. At the easiest, a 372 or 347 bolts on perfectly. The next worst would be the bolt hole at the wing end would have to be relocated but you don't have one period. Strange. The next worst would be the pin for the drawbolt is in a different spot so the pin would have to be relocated. In each case you will have to trim off the wing end of the share, but that is pretty manageable with a cutoff wheel or a torch.

Your shares are SHOT. I've never seen shares worn that far back. I don't like to throw away even the most worn out ones I have just in case I would need a foundation to rebuild on, but boy I think yours are pretty far gone. I have to wonder if the frog is worn also.

And, a John Deere 44 was built 1945 to 1957 so it could have had blacksmith share bottoms or throw-away lay bottoms.
