Hi all,
Rookie farmer here, I have a lot of chickens and am hoping to get the cost of feed down by not buying any but growing some myself. My chickens are free range but still get fed feed so I assume I don't have to give
them anything abundant with nutrients and stuff since they get most of their organic material right from the ground. I'd like to grow wheat, barley, and if I can, a blend of millet for them to eat. I am also looking for a
combine, possibly an old gleaner or John Deere. Would I be able to harvest wheat, barley, and millet all at once with one of these old machines? I assume I can do both wheat and barley but millet is where I'm a bit
confused

Hi Just throwing this out there. Will the three crops growing together be ready to harvest at the same time? If the grain moisture is way off on one type of grain how will you store it? Might be better to grow three blocks of different grains, manage for best production eg time of planting, and harvest at optimum time store them separately then blend them to feed as required.

I think you can. You may need to swath and leave windrow lay 4 or 5 days so all grain is dry when combining. Might be hard to set the sieves in combine for a clean sample but what's the difference if your feeding it.

Albert Lea Seed sells a spring barley, oats and field pea mix that they say can be combined for grain if you swath it so it dries evenly. Direct cutting would require a grain dryer.
