haven't had the Super A out for some time and finally got to play with it again. The charging system not working, tapped on the generator and started working. Each time I shut it off and started back up again not charging again. Repeat tapping again and starts charging again. Last time hand didn't move, turned on lights and hand showed discharge, turned off lights and hand went back to center of gauge. Would the battery be charged for hand to stay on center of gauge and not taking any more charge? Thanks for all info. Pembroke

Mornin Pembroke, you ask:

1) Would the battery be charged for hand to stay on center of gauge and not taking
any more charge

Possible (subject to genny, VR and RPM) but not likely, OFTEN they will still
deflect just a bit over to charge even if only a few amps...Does it make a
difference if the lights are switched on or off ???? Ive also seen older ammeters
that arent accurate or may stick in certain locations which high enough current or
vibration might help. SEE MY TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURE TO TEST IF ITS A GENERATOR
ORRRRRRRRRR A VOLTAGE REGULATOR PROBLEM easy peasey to temporarily jump and by pass
the VR to see which may be the problem. At fast RPM if you temporarily dead ground
the gennys FLD post if she charges then BUT NOT OTHERWISE the genny itself is okay
so the VFR may be bad OR NOT WELL GROUNDED.......

2) The charging system not working, tapped on the generator and started working.

Possible reasons may be: Brushes worn down very low,,,,,,,,,,,Brush hold down
springys are dirty, weak or stuck/corroded. Sometimes if you clean up the commutator
or clean, light lube and free up the hold down springys it may help.

3) If the VR is saddle mounted onto Generator and tapping makes her charge, instead
of the above it may be the VR contacts are burned/pitted/corroded or its springs are
clogged up.

Work through my Troubleshooting Procedure.......Also the ammeter may be faulty

A good working charging system at fast RPM should cause battery voltage to rise 6.5
to 7+ on a 6 volt or 13 to 14+ on a 12 DOES IT ?????????

Have you cleaned the contacts on the voltage regulator with some very fine sand paper? The system should always charge at least 2 or 3 amps.

If the tractor has a battery powered coil distributor ignition it will draw around 4 amps so the charging system would have to re supply that 4 amps to break even. I owned a ton of those old Farmalls when I was a used tractor dealer and some ammeters hovered right at zero once charged while many many others indicated a few positive charging amps about all the time ??? Theres just too many variables and unknowns to state for sure what's happening with the OP's tractor, it may or MAY NOT be just fine ??? but as said IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT LOL

Fun sparky chatting with you, Im NOT the Farmall man as compared to Bob M and Professor Jim
