The Cessna pump on my 450 Case is leaking and coating the radiator with oil. The pump seams fine otherwise. I was wondering if anyone had tried to put a new shaft seal in before and had any luck with it? I bought a seal that looks like the one I pulled out. I spoke with a local hyd shop and they assured me that there should be no psi there if the seal around the gears were good.

There is little if any pressure at the seal on most hydraulic pumps. The reason is that there is usually a bleed hole from the seal side of the bearing in the pump that returns any fluid coming past the bearing to the low pressure, or suction side of the pump. As long as this bleed hole is not plugged there will be very little pressure at the seal. I've replaced them in a couple of pumps with good success.

As long as the pump hasn't worn internally to the point that it's bypassing enough oil and creating more pressure on the seal than it can handle, or the shaft isn't grooved by the old seal then you ought to be able to reseal it with no problems. For the cost of the seal vs the cost of another pump it's worth a try...
