Sorry to be long winded here, but I have a problem I would love to solve so I can sleep at night! I have a backhoe that I have been plinking around on it for a year trying to start it. The problem is in the starter wiring. It's one of those things where someone wanted to store in on my property and haven't seen them for several years. I have had it running and have moved when need be. Now I can't get energy to the starter. I have had the starter checked out, replaced the solenoid, replaced the key switch, starter button, new batteries and battery cables, and now a new starter relay. I believe the wires are crossed somewhere. I tried tracing as best I could and have attached a diagram as how it is wired now. I had the numbers labeled with numbers, but left the paper in the weather one day, and that was the end of that. Plus a few other fellows have had there hand at it. If some one has a wiring diagram I would love to see it. I bought some manuals for a 510C, but I have learned the backhoe is a 510 even though it has 510C on the serial number plate. I figure it is a mid to late 1980s model. I am attaching a picture of the relay and a part I don't even know what it is. It is next to the relay. If someone knows what it is, I would like to know. Is it another relay? Also, I am attaching a diagram as how it is wired now. However, the wire in the diagram that goes from the alternator to the relay completes a circuit and sparks, so I know that is probably wrong. By the way, I don't know much about wiring if you haven't figured that out by my post.

The unknown part is a circuit breaker. Common part on that age of john deere's. And they are not cheap. It looks like you are missing a wire from the top of the relay to the top of the solenoid, since the alternator isn't hooked to anything to charge. And the left side of the push button should go to the keyswitch and a wire from the keyswitch should be going to the injection and fuel pumps. Just trying to make this work by looking at it. chris

Thanks for the info. I will reroute the wires see if it works. I did find that part listed on the John Deere site, part number AR41287 Funny thing, I took the entire bracket into the JD dealer in Mount Vernon WA and he didn't know what it was.

It appears matthies answered the part about the circuit breaker of which I 2nd. I think the relay post I circled in red should attach to battery or top post on starter solenoid not the alternator. Also IMHO the starter push button should be supplied elect. from the ign switch not inj pump & fuel pump.

Switched some wires and got power to the solenoid, but it's not
energizing the starter yet. Maybe the plunger isn't picking up the
contact pivot on the shaft. Might have to pull it and make sure
everything is correct.

Does your solenoid have two small terminals, if it does make sure you are on the one marked with a "S". chris

Chris, it does have two small terminals, but no markings. I was going by a drawing in the manual that is actually for the 510. Some of the good news, the circuit breaker seems to work. More good news, we got it started, but had to jump the two big terminals with a screw driver to get it to energize the starter. Maybe I'll just hook up an external switch that does the same thing just so I can move the behemoth. I got it parked on concrete now so that it won't get stuck in my soft soil. Rainy season is coming in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks for all the help everyone, it was really bothering me I couldn't get it out of the way.
