New Case 430

Well, not exactly new, its a 1964 but new to me! Anyway...I just bought this 1964 Case 440 (gasoline) for $3,000 and while mechanically inclined, I have never owned a tractor but I have driven lots of them. Its in great shape and the owner (basically one owner if you can believe a used car salesman) just had it on his small family farm and traded it in for a New Holland model that is easier to get in and out of as he was almost 80.

Everything seems to be working and it runs like a top. Whoever owned it maintained it well. It has one bad hydraulic cylinder for the bucket that I need to fix somehow.

Besides changing the fluids in the spring is there anything specific to this tractor I should be looking at?

I'm not sure that it will necessarily be "cheap"
but the best fix for your cylinder would be to
take it to a shop that specializes in hydraulics
and have them fix it for you. They can often make
up what ever you need.

Your 430 appears to be newer than a '64. I would say '65 or newer. It has the "Draft-O-Matic" decal on the hood, and the front axle, from what I can tell, appears to have the hydrostatic power steering.

Not just sure where your cylinder is leaking. From the pic. I gather that you have an external leak in the cyl barrel. If so, realize you are dealing with 2250# of hyd pressure, and tin and JB weld ain't going to amount to diddly squat.
The loader appears to be a Freeman brand, not sure of model.

Where do you live in MA.If you are near Hudson , NH. I used to use a guy there that was very reasonable (Small shop) ,in fact down right cheap , his work was excellent. He has his own machine shop and makes a lot of his own parts. If you like i'll check in and see if he is still there.

Thats a nice find. If the leak is in the rusted area on the cylinder barrel you may need a new cylinder barrel.

JB weld will not hold the pressure.

A good cylinder shop should be able to repair your cylinder by replacing your cylinder barrel

Yea, I was real happy to find this tractor, it seemed like a good deal and there are lots of parts out there. It might be newer than a 64 but I was told it was a 64. I guess I could run the serial number and find out for sure?

It is a draftomatic with power steering and a freeman bucket but the cylinder I need has apparently been discontinued. I am in Vermont and the shop in NH was recommended to me but I would have to ship the cylinder because they are so far away or drive three hours to get there. I am still looking for a more local shop. I have some time because the tractor isn't going to be used until the snow melts and it was -22 this morning so the snow isn't melting anytime soon!

I wouldn't discount the JB weld repair. I have seen it used to fix a small leak just like this. You use a series of hose clamps over the sheet metal and while I agree that the JB weld fix definitely won't hold forever, I might get a season out of it, maybe even two? I will post something here when I try it and we will see if it works, I have a fair amount of corrosion on the cylinder wall so I am not holding my breath that it will actually work for very long... if at all.
