I seen the first 45 with factory power steering, Very curious, how long did they use that system, that looked like a good one. The neighbor bought that new, before i got to know him,he used that for his spud raising tractor.

The WD 45 was the first ( 1953) Allis Chalmers to have power steering.

the factory power steering for the WD45 was first offered as a option on the 1956 model, some late production 1955 tractors had the power steering option.

I have a 1954 WD45 and they steer so easy I don't see the need of power steering. If you put a loaded on it then you might need power steering.

Yes mine is a wide front but years ago we rented the farm across the road from us and he had a WD45 narrow front and he told us to use it. I plowed and worked ground with it and pulled an AC combine with it. It actually steered better than our Farmall M or JD A which also had no power steering.

I have no idea what year Max ordered this 45, but it's got the big single front tire on it,he had some 2 row potatoe equipment for it. Oh i suppose he pulled his 4 row corn planter,cultivator, with it too. The only thing is the rear wheels are shot, due to the chloride leaking out, but i am sure it's got less than 500 hours on it.

Mine doesn't. My MM U steers better than my wd and neither have power steering. Maby I should look into that. lol.

In 1957 production switched to the "D" series. That power steering was much more built in, than an afterthought like the WD45. But it was still power assist, not hydrostatic.

I agree, the WD & WD-45 steered just fine...EXCEPTING for the un-forseen Groundhog hole or Tile blow-out you can hit...

THEN, the steering wheel WILL spin faster than you can ever think..completely to and against the "Stop"..and I don't care who has it in their hand, you will NOT
control it ( BTDT, bought the "T" shirt)...and I had as strong a hands and wrists as anyone can have...

That is why you were always told NOT to hook your Thumbs around the steering wheel..!!

Dad's WD-45 had power steering and it was a great Joy to work ground with it. It steered even easier than out Late Styled JD "B" tractors that we worked plowed ground--first time over, with the Soil Surgeon..

Always used Duals on the WD-45 when working ground and used the IH #37 Disk (10'7"), with a 12' JD Harrow..

Plowing was nicer with the power steering..ya didn't have to get a Death-Grip on the steering wheel, when crossing open furrows.!!

We could (and did) turn 50 acres in one day with our 2 WD-45's and 4-14' Semi-mounted plows every year..( Dark-to Dark, but we did)..!

The 1949 John Deere A was bad at taking steering wheel out of you hands going over open furrows.

Yea.... JD's New Roll-A-Matic" really improved them..!!

BUT, it sure improved your GRIP before that...!!

Dad had super strong hands..( Hand Milked 13 cows before School every day) and broke a lot of Baseball bats at the games..!

Those certainly were the Days..(excepting for NOT having an elevator..everything had to be SHOVELED)...!!!

I was the "Kid", so I got the pleasure of pumping up ALL the tires on everything with a Hand Tire Pump..30 lbs was all I could get at that time..!

I shoveled a lot stuff when I was young. We used sawdust for bed in free stalls of cow barn. I had a Chevy 1 1/2 truck with a 7 1/2 x 14 foot bed with 6 foot sides and went to saw mill and loaded it by hand and come home and unload it by hand ( no dump). I shoveled a lot of ear corn and oats with a scoop shovel.

I must of had a lot of arm muscle when a kid cause cultivated a lot of corn with a front mounted two row on WD. Put a steering knob on for a year. Wrist hurt for a year.

I own a 1957 wd45 diesel wide front with factory power steering. it works very well you can steer it with one finger. A friend of mine has a 1955 wd45 diesel with single front. You can't hardly steering the single front. it's more like herding cows!
