I have a 1974 ford 4500 loader back hoe with a 4 speed power reversing trans .The trans always worked good but now when you shuttle it forward it takes a couple of seconds then it goes and is strong but when you shuttle in reverse it takes about 10 seconds for it to kick in and once it does its works fine and is strong . I checked pump pressure and its to manual specs and it seams to have good flow . does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem or how to get in to check the sump screen ?

Have you tried a filter change? No water in it I presume.

Did the behavior change with the colder weather? If so it might be water from condensation mixed in with the oil. I would try changing the fluid and filter if it hasn't been changed in a while.

Here's a link to the parts drawing for the pump and related parts, including the pickup screen. It's inside the transmission at the bottom, labeled 49 in the drawing.

And here's a link to the parts drawing for the transmission case.

I haven't been into one, but it looks like the access cover on the bottom, labeled 3 in the second drawing, might give you access to the pickup screen from the bottom.

I have one of those transmissions with the flywheel, and torque convertor I'd like to sell (has the same problem). My brother used to rebuild those all the time back when he worked for a Ford dealer, I think he said there is a clutch pack that has to be rebuilt to fix that (I'm not 100% sure on that, I've never worked on one). I put a regular 6x2 manual transmission with a clutch in my 4500 because I didn't want to deal with that transmission.
