My Gator won?t start, not because of the cold, it?s in a heated garage. Battery is up and charged. Noticed the last time I started it that the starter acted like the battery was low. Just clicks like a dead battery. So I charged it but still won?t turn over and start. Any ideas? Thanks

My mom has an early Gator and the starter on it had been giving her problems (off and on) for a couple of months. I went searching for a replacement starter online and I found a third-party seller who sold one through (oh boy, I'm going to get roasted for this!) Wal-Mart.com for $53 shipped to my door. I took it out of the box and every single casting and milling mark was identical to the old Denso that I took off. I'm not going to say for the record that they came from the same factory, but I'm just going to say that they are visually identical.
I bolted it on and it works great. I never did see how much Mother Deere wanted for a replacement. Let the "you should buy local" rants begin.

If you have not done so check the cables especially where the ground connects to the frame. It usually comes down to the simplest being the best solution. Especially before changing out parts.

A test light or volt meter will be helpful.

Start across the battery posts (directly to the posts, not the cable ends).

Hit the starter, watch the light or meter. If it dims or the voltage drops low, the battery is low/bad.

If the battery checks good, start moving one lead at a time, trying the starter after each move. When the power drops, that is where the problem is.

If you get good power at the starter, and it is not turning, the starter is bad.

By trying the starter after each test lead is moved, what you are doing is "load testing" the electrical system. Just be careful, it could start at any time during the test!
