A while back I removed the transmission and differential cover plate on my GTB. I needed to repair the gear shifter for being too wobbly and only planned on replacing the lock pin. As usually happens one thing leads to another or its like opening a can worms when something is old. I found a little more end play than I liked with the differential bearings. I went to remove a thin shim under the end cap and found the 1311 Bower ball bearing to be broken. Since this ball bearing is shielded on the inside none of the large fragments went into the gear train. Still I couldn't sleep until I had removed and inspected everything Including splitting the tractor. Both of the 1311 bearings were found to be broken and the right differential tapered roller bearing was damaged from the metal debris. Has anyone seen this problem? Should the shielded side of the bearing be facing the oil preventing it from receiving splash oil?
