Ford 2000; 3 cyl gas; 4/1 trans....for some time now the throttle will not keep the engine at a set speed. Throttle lever moves easily but engine speed does not change until the lever is pulled most of the way down. Wide range of low to medium speed does not seem accessible. When the lever is pulled all the way down to rev up the engine, the lever will not stay at that speed, it migrates back up to a low idle as if there is some spring action going on. I assume there is some issue with the throttle linkage or maybe wear in the mechanism. Any ideas on what would cause this? Thanks.

Take rite rear lower steering cover off, you will find the throttle linkage. There is a nut on bottom 9/16 wrench fits. titen nut till feels like you want it. The friction disc goes bad from time to time. Get a C5NN 518. It will make a new disc with some modifactions

There's a friction disc on the bottom end of the throttle lever or it could be your governor linkage needs adjustment. I&T manual covers it.

Another possibility: Many folks are in the habit of squirting some oil an anything that moves. Usually not a bad idea, but many throttle linkages use a spring-loaded friction disc to keep the throttle where you set it. So make sure that your friction disc is clean and dry. If it is oily, take it apart and clean the disc and contact parts and areas with brake cleaning solvent, or similar solvent.
