Hello folks.
New member, and new Ferguson owner.

I just bought some property and a mid-50's Ferguson came with it. The previous owner thinks it is a '56. It looks to be in very good condition, but I know essentially nothing about it. I've spent about 20 minutes on it.

The problem: While reversing it sounds like it's grinding rocks. It goes into gear without a problem. No noises as long as the clutch is depressed. No noise in any forward gear. I haven't tried reversing in high range, if that matters.

The property is 3 hours from my full time life, and I'm working on finding a local mechanic to look at it. The previous owner didn't say anything about this, and he hasn't yet responded to a message sent. I'm no mechanic, but mechanical minded. Pretty sure this is above my pay grade.

Until these thing happen, how concerned should I be about using it? How difficult is this likely repair, besides the physical separation of the halves? AKA expected repair costs.

Anything else I should know about this model??

Thanks for any help you can give.
Ken

I would leave the lift arms down just shy of the top. I bet you
growl goes away.

The serial number should be on a piece of aluminum on the dash to the left of the steering column. If you post that number, many on here can tell you what you have.

When it's in reverse, does it move, or just sit and grind?

Either way, sounds like the reverse idler gear is broken, teeth missing, or the bearing/shaft has failed or come out.

If it is that severe, it needs to be repaired. Other damage can be done, a tractor is pretty useless without reverse.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, I've been off line for a few days.
I'll check the VIN and report back. Thanks for the info.

The tractor moves fine in reverse. Although, I've only reversed about 20 feet total. Backing it into it's parking space.

Yes, I've found a local tractor mechanic who has a great word of mouth reputation. Once I can get back up there, I'll contact him and get it in for a check up.
