I have a 1949 B that runs great, good oil pressure. It has a problem in that it smokes badly when first started. After running a few minutes the smoke clears up and it does not smoke at all. The smoke is not black so I am sure it is oil smoke. Any suggestions.

Most likely valve guides. No seals on the valves in these engines and don't put them on. The engine was not designed for them. New valve guides are cheap and easy to install.

When I got this head in the fellow thought if one didn't do the job maybe two would help, (I guess)

This what happens to the guide hole when you use the seals so it will drink more oil.

There is a cheap and easy fix for this but "non-professional". I had the same blast of smoke on start up but clean smoke for the rest of time. I removed the rocker arm shaft and cleaned up the top of the valves and springs removing all presence of oil... ether works good or just gasoline, and then I applied Ultra Grey Silicone gasket sealer around the top of the valves. I have done this to several engines in need of this help... never had a failure. If you're not ready to do other overhaul work it saves a lot of work until the rest needs help and then the new guides go in.
