I saw a Farmall H yesterday with the battery location below the seat, and I saw another one with the battery in the typical location farther up on the tractor.

Is the battery location underneath the seat something that farmers did as an aftermarket thing or did any Farmall H tractors come with the battery back there?

No H tractors were factory equipped with a under seat battery box. Part of the SH tractors were though and they could be installed on a H. SH that used the under seat location have a serial number plate installed with long part front to rear. H and SH that used the battery location under left side of fuel tank had long part of serial plate up and down. Really when H tractors started a battery, or any electrics was a optional attachment.

The typical H and M had the battery under the fuel tank. When the live hydraulic pumps got put on the Later M's and H's and supers the battery moved to under the seat and the hydraulic tank got put under the tank. This move was on the hundred series also. This lasted till the 60 series came out in the later 50's

Thabks! This is the only picture I have of that area of the one tractor. Unfortunately someone painted off the serial number tag. Any idea based off this picture if it’s an H or Super H? I know it’s a lot to ask.

Ok, that "battery under the seat" is not the same as the Super H battery box under the seat.

In your picture I can clearly see a deck-mounted seat frame. The battery appears to be BESIDE the seat, on the right side, as I can see battery cables running to that area.

That is a farmer modification, nothing IH ever did.

On a Super H, the battery box is directly under the seat, as the base of the seat frame.

I am 99.9% positive that it is an H, just by the location of the starter switch. Super H's had the starter switch mounted directly on the starter itself.

Thanks! It was advertised as an H but just wanted to be sure. Is it easy to move the battery back to the original spot? I guess it doesn’t really matter either way but just wondering.

Correct. An H never had a battery box NEXT to the seat, but the original Farmall MD did have that box next to the seat, on the right side. Also had a battery box under the tank, just like any M.

I got a '51 M out in my shop with a battery box seat base. I bought the battery box as excess and
obsolete inventory from a surplus company that bought semi-truck loads of this kind of stuff from
Farmall. Got two actually, $5 each. One went on my Super H, other one on Dad's M.

My only regret is I didn't buy every single one the place had. Think they had 10-12. Keep in mind if
they charged me $5 each they paid about $1 each.

But back in the 1950's it was really easy to do that type of thing, walk into your local IH dealer and
buy the stuff. That's how I put the tach, hour meter, speedometer on my Super H. The tach and cable were
new, distributor drive housing was used, parts manager was going to do the same thing to his H but I beat
him to it.

The battery box on my Farmall M is mounted in front of the clutch pedal. Easy to open and get to the battery. It was a modifcation made by Cherry & Sons in Gisborne. I like it better than a battery two inches away from a glass bowl full of petrol…

It's pretty easy to return it to the stock location. All you need is a whole new battery box and the bolts.

if it has the battery under the seat and disc brakes it is a super H for sure, or see how the serial number tag is put on, long frt. to back the battery goes under the seat.
