I was recently given a Wisconsin VH4D engine with no magneto, hooked up to a saw blade. The previous owner had trouble with the magneto and now probably no longer have it since it's been years. My question is which model magneto fits on this engine to start with so I can attempt to source one, even a "junk" one.?

Thank you, now to find one... Not looking to spend hundreds of dollars as I got it for free and just want to see if I can get it to fire up again.

Unfortunately I was working on it today and discovered all the valves were stuck open, so no compression. It's not worth it to me to tear the engine down so thanks for the info and the offer but I think it's headed to the scrapper unless someone wants it around here for a project.

You don't need to tear it down yet. Remove
the carb and tin to get into the valve
tappet covers. Remove them and use
penetrating oil and motor oil. Carefully
tap the valves with a wooden dowel. Hand
crank it or a starter if it has one. If you
get them moving put some oil in each spark
plug hole too. If the engine is still good
compression will come back. Valves will
stick from sitting too long. STP oil
treatment in the oil and some 2 cycle oil
added to the gas can help prevent it. Use
some Seafoam treatment in the gas and oil
to clean up the gunk deposits if you get it
running.

If the rings are sticking red ATF fluid breaks them free too. Add some to each cylinder.

Im aware of the soaking methods and already did it myself. I tried opening a head and wound up stripping one bolt and breaking another. I was told by a friend that these particular engines are known to grow the valve guides and rods together so much so that they cant be soaked open again anyways, and even if you did youd wind up bending one even with a wooden dowel.
