I'm trying to get my 100 that I bought a couple of years ago running right. It starts and runs well but after it warms up a few minutes it smokes like crazy. I can't tell by the color of the smoke but its not black. I tried uploading a picture and all I could get is a link that no one would be able to open. It wasn't running when I got it as it was missing the radiator and I think based on the grill someone hit it. While waiting for a radiator I had the head gone through by a engine shop and put in new rings. It has smoked badly from day 1. If its not black smoke can it be water leaking into a cylinder once it heats up a bit? It currently only has water in the radiator, no antifreeze. What color would the smoke be if it were burning oil somehow. Holding a paper to the exhaust doesn't come out oily. I'm thinking the head will have to come off again but would like to have some idea what I'm looking for before taking it apart.

It could very well be coolant and a leaking head gasket. Some of the gaskets require sealant and even have this printed on them.

When you put new rings in did you replace the liners, or at least give a light honing to remove the glaze from the cylinders? If you didn't the rings may not seat correctly.

And just to ask and not accuse, did you install the rings correctly, following the instructions that came with the rings or in a service manual?

I did seal the 2nd head gasket as the first one was definitely leaking. I also honed the cylinders and followed the instructions for the rings but sometimes old age sets in with me and could have affected the
rings. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to determine if I have a oil problem or a coolant problem.

It's not clear have you just run it for short periods or have you got it good and hot? I'd do that see if it gets better or worse. Then check spark plugs see if indication of oil. Bluish gray smoke should be oil.

This would be a good time to check the compression on each cylinder.

Generally speaking:

Black smoke = fuel
Blue smoke = oil
White smoke = water

Its possible there is some residue left in the muffler from before the overhaul and now its getting burned up just for kicks I would try a new muffler. I have found that can be a problem with new motor as the muffler was all crudded up from the bad engine.

I say use it, get it hot, and periodically check oil and radiator for mixed fluids. Put a quart of ATF in 5 gallons of its gas also. Might need an oil change soon if it gets nasty from being idle a long time.

I had to buy a new muffler when I got the tractor. I'm never lucky enough for something like that to be the issue.

well for one thing it has to be pumping a lot of oil out to be able to see blue smoke. read your spark plugs. do a compression check, make sure the intake is free and choke is not closing.is the tractor tuned up to factory spec's ? is the carb clean and adjusted?so much to check... you just don't tear an engine down till you find the problem. plus an overhauled engine must be put to work and run at operating temp with some hrs. on it, to seat the rings. maybe the cyl's are glazed? are the rings not installed upside down??? that will pump your oil out.
