Hi guys,
Just tuning up my 4020. Did compression check and it checked out just fine. New injectors got the engine purring nicely. It is hard to get it to shift into 7th. But lever bottoms in top of slot and it won t shift into 8th. New filters and checked suction screen. Screen was perfectly clean. Been looking at the linkages and I would say it is not a linkage adjustment issue. But I am not positive on that. Any ideas?

Cable is only for park. Need to adjust linkage and park cable per the manual and then see how it is.

Thanks. Just tried adjusting the linkage. Doesn t appear to be the problem either.

If adjusting trans shift rod doesn't help trans shift into 8th gear then I'll suspect problem in the shift control valve

X2. It doesn't mechanically shift the
valve, it directs shift oil to move
the spool to which ever gear you
select. You can test it with a 160#
gauge a 2 foot hose and the adapter
for the test ports. Pressure should
be 140-160# at 1900 rpm. Deere
service manual explains the procedure
or an IT manual.

I would suspect linkage issue / something worn out.

Disconnect the rear end from the planetary pack using the lever on the floor by your right heel. For safety purposes, jack up the rear end so the tires are not on the ground.

Locate the shift valve on the right side of the tractor and disconnect the shifting linkage. Use the two levers and on the shift valve and cycle through the gears with the tractor running. Even though the rear end is disconnected you will still fill the transmission shift.
Also as stated, check the pressures using the instructions in the manual.

You might have work linkage or parts inside of the shift valve.

Thanks. Because of the cab that is on tractor I had never seen this lever by left heel. I can t move it. It is frozen. I expect it has never been moved. Unsure how hard I should try. Don t want to break something.

Ok. Thanks guys. I got up enough nerve to take that shift box on the right hand side off for inspection. I had already determined the local wrecker had several to buy. Low and behold a roll pin had worked it s way out over the years on the lower lever. It seemed it could be binding. Replaced with a new one. Reassembled and filled with oil. Shifts beautiful into 8th gear. I wonder if it was put into the auction where I bought it on account of this and the three injectors that weren t working properly.

Thanks for update. I glad you determined failed pin was the non shifting problem. You're probably correct on this was the reason tractor was at auction.
