Is there a lot to gain from new pistons and sleeves or can I hone and seal my sleeves and re ring my pistons and rebuild with new rod and mains as I ve had the crank ground and polished I m just curious i

Clearance and taper are two considerations.
How much you got?
Telescoping gauges are your friend.
Then again, labor is free and so you can do the job twice when it starts smoking real soon. Everyone loves doing a job twice.
Never enough time to do it right the first time but always enough time to do it over.

Honestly I just can t bring myself to toss the old pistons and as far as doing it right the crank was ground and polished I could check the tolerances to the pistons and cyl bores not a problem I m just making an effort to be nostalgic and not throw money at an issue instead of working through it with an appropriate knowledge but I know the phrase as I ve said it myself for years now

Really it s not a time or money issue I wonder about the origins of the sleeves and pistons in overbores are they Chinese can I award nostalgia with common sense machining practices the head has been rebuilt the block is ready I m 10/10 over on the crank I m not suggesting re clap the bearings but I know I prefer American aluminum how many folks send out for a rebuild kit and manually check tolerances at assembly anyhow, this engine was torn down with a stuck ring and a bad head gasket

It's a matter of them being still in tolerance, scratches, rust pitting, ring land condition, skirt clearance.

The old gas engines are somewhat forgiving. Also depends on the planned use, if it's for parades, you can get away with more than for a working tractor.

I think by the time I buy what I need I could have free pistons and liners if I buy the kit is there a way to get American made stuff ?

Just gonna plow my garden and drag trailers

I doubt you'll find American made, but you can look.

Best insurance is to measure everything before installing, trust nothing!

Be sure to get the seats in the bottom of the block clean, and check the deck height before putting the pistons in.

I did a TO-30 rebuild a couple years ago. Bought a piston/sleeve kit from here. Upon disassembly I found the original pistons which are of a different design from the new replacement ones.

After checking things with micrometers, I reused the original pistons with the new sleeves.

For as nasty as this engine was, bearings and pistons were in very good shape. The top ring groove was slightly worn, but acceptable. I had to get a set of rings as the ones in the kit did not fit.

Do check your wrist pin bushings carefully. One of mine had a little crack and all were worn enough that replacement was desirable/necessary.

So - a smart move? Don't know. Tractor runs great. I used it today. Not a plowing tractor tho. I like that it still runs the original pistons, but I'm (and people reading this) are the only ones who know and it doesn't add any monetary value to the machine.

I have a set of new pistons, rings, and wrist pin bushings available if anyone needs them. No sleeves tho.

I guess your sleeves were factory bore size?

You didn t like what you found in tolerance from the kit?

I'm confident that the kit's pistons/sleeves/rings were well matched and I would have had no problems if I would have replaced the pistons. I find no fault in the quality of the new assemblies. The rings from the kit are 'made in USA', there is no country of origin associated with the pistons, and I don't recall any indication of country of origin associated with the sleeves.

The kit I received from this site was/is totally acceptable for its intended purpose.

In your situation I wouldn't mess with worn sleeves. And as previously posted, carefully check your wrist pin bushings.

So ive gathered some parts and im learning alot im inching closer to reassembly

i found old sealed power sleeve pin piston and ring sets (5 of them)
i foudnd clevite main and rod bearings
the crank was ground .010 under in litchfield IL

the only unknown sourced parts ill have in the rig that i know of is gaskets and the valves and springs i think they are steiner

can anyone speak to using the flanged front bearing from a to20 style main i have the old thrust washer and fiber washer but sourcing
parts from the internet i ordered a set of main bearings that had the flange on the front, im hoping between the origional thrust and the
flanged inner main and the shims that came off of it i can get the right end play please correct me if im wrong, if not ill have to
postpone assembly until the origional non flanged style can be shipped

who can tell me about rebuilding the oil pump i read a little bit about it
