Forum members,
Considering purchasing an 861 Ford in good to very good condition. What are the price ranges low to high? I understand there are a lot of variables. Seller says it is in very good condition but needs a tune up. I have worked with this vintage 172 engine before and have a little insight into its workings. Any and all info is appreciated.

Condition is part of what drives a sell price, other things that factor into price is what is are the options or add ons with the tractor such as power steering, pie weights, or hydraulic valve. Ballpark $3000 to $5000 without more info.

Thanks for the reply! I am not familiar with "hydraulic valve"? I am also checking on power steering.

Valve that replaces the top cover to run
rear hydraulic remotes. Just type ford 861
hydraulic remote into google.

In need of tune-up is likely to mean that it is very sick because if new plugs and points would make it run good he would have done that. $500.00- $5500.

This 861 is diesel. I have worked on a 172 in the past and tune up could be filters and possibly injector pump cleaning which could be expensive in Minnesota- $800 plus. Bottom line is
I will just have to test it out when I do a close up assessment and try out.

I am not a fan of the early Ford 4 cylinder diesel engines.
These engines are conversions from gasoline engines and produce about 5 fewer PTO HP than do contemporary gasoline versions.
They are also well known for crankshaft failures, whether equipped with balancer or otherwise.

Mr. T. I have a 971D. I agree that "need of a tune-up" is likely to necessitate a full pump service. I sent mine out to a fellow here on YT 6-8 years ago and it came back no better. Three years ago I got it done at the local shop and that rebuild made a huge difference. It cost me $701.00. I use mine around 50 hours/ year.

Eric Rogenkamp of Eric's Machinery in Bluffton, MN has done work on both pumps and injectors for me. He's very reasonable.

I agree with what the others have said on value. Just FYI and another pricing reference point, as well as a shameless plug for myself:
I have a 1955 860 for sale presently with the 172 gas engine. Has very good, matching 13.6-28 rear tires, heavy pie weights, factory split front wheel weights, Rest-o-Ride seat, swinging drawbar, and I can't remember what else. Original tractor with great tin, needing paint. Runs flawlessly, no smoke and great oil pressure. 12V alternator conversion. Starts instantly hot or cold. Good clutch, and good hydraulics. Turn-key worker, could be a fantastic restoration piece if desired. My price on this whole rig is $3500. It's on eBay right now. Located in south east Virginia.
Just thought I'd mention that.
