I was about to ask a question now it's locked. Nothing went south there that I can see. |

Not yet, but it would. When others discover it (which they usually don't in site comments), the very same thing that would have happened in the other topic, would happen here.
It has happened very frequently when people report problem threads here in site comments. In general, I don't discuss moderation. The moderator does discuss that with people who contact her using the "Feedback Form" link in the left hand menu of the home page. Then moderation is discussed in private so it doesn't snowball into problems. Moderation is yet another topic that gets attacked and usually those threads are deleted too. It's work to vet and delete threads, not fun work.
I locked this one myself though, and often lock threads where someone is reporting a problem post just to avoid further comment that may be problematic and sometimes result in a ban. I normally don't go further as I did on that thread because most people know the rules and the whys. People jump to the conclusion that we disagree with their opinions, when the reality is, it has absolutely nothing to do with their opinions and stances, we operate on what works and what doesn't to maintain a level of decency and civility in forums.
I didn't mention one other factor. This forum is not for moderation even though people use it for that. I've stated that repeatedly. The "Report to Moderator" link and the "Feedback Form" are for that purpose. This forum is for technical issues and suggestions associated with the software of the site. That's not hard and fast, but it's best that way for the most part. By far, the most efficient way to discuss things like that is to send one of us an email. Many key long-time members of the community do this. |

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks.
I'll ask that question now if I may. Instead of deleting the complete thread why not just the offending posts?
I'm gonna guess because it's easier to toss it all, would that be right? |

You hit it on the head. It can take an hour to try and weed out problems on a long thread. That's a lot of time to invest in dealing with a small number of bad actors. Since that happens multiple times a day, you can see how time gets eaten up. |

Well, why not give these "bad actors" a warning or two and if they don't straighten up then they get deleted?
I'm on a couple of other forums where you get ONE warning then you are gone if you persist. Seems to work very well.
Anyway, thanks for your time. I won't bother you anymore, today at least. |
