Does anyone know the listed engine RPM that is optimal for the operation of a Ford 723 series backhoe? I am unable to find a manual that will give that information. I have a 1958 Ford 1841-S Industrial tractor with a 712 loader and 723 backhoe. The tractor manual states that the tractor itself will have the best torque power between 1,400 to 1,500 RPM's. The loader manual states that it's operation is best between 1,500 to 1,700 RPM in low gears. I am assuming that optimal loader RPM's would ring true for the backhoe also? |

I would go with the loader speed. Most hydraulic units, like backhoes, operate best at a high pump flow, which occurs at higher engine speeds. |

I think that the operator should use the backhoe at an RPM that suits him best, nothing worse than watching an operator that can't control the hoe smoothly and jerk free smashing the equipment against the stops ever movement, a cool steady operator will get more work done and have less breakages than a speedy gonzalas, my two cents worth.

I agree with AJ, the speed is up to the operator's comfort level and skill. My saying the same speed as the loader was referring to the likely optimum design setting, I doubt one can keep a specific rpm while actually running a loader at work either (other than just setting still and running at that rpm while operating the loader hydraulics). I don't think I know of a true operator watching a tach or setting speed by one for a loader or hoe. There are many machines that do not have tachs. |

Thank you everyone for the post. I'll print out the responses and put it with my manuals as a point of reference. |
