|
|
Just having a bad time tuning. put new needle and seat in and it stopped the gas from flowing while sitting, but now can't just get in and start it without starting fluid. Governor goes wide open when at start. Looking for linkage for it because wire goes from the handle to the linkage, but the parts that go around the motor seem to be all there but loose. Maybe the spring is the issue?? Wish someone was old school near Indy and could set the points, dwell, carb because I am not familiar with how a governor works, I have a good knowledge of things, just can't figure this out. No matter how I adjust the carb I can't get it right. The carb was a problem in the first place, but could get it started and worked fairly well. Replaced the points, the carb I rebuilt and now just can't control the rpms or start without starting fluid. Any advice would be appreciated. |

I'd quit using that starting fluid. It is really hard on the pistons and rings. Try using carb cleaner instead. A bit less
explosive. I could be wrong on this, maybe carb cleaner is bad also. good luck gobble |

Sounds like you might want to check compression, if it's below 100 lbs you will have starting issues. A battery that's not up to par won't start a low compression engine as it doesn't spin it over fast enough to build compression. Try pulling in 4th gear to start and see how it runs, the starting fluid will cause the motor to race. I have a 300 with 85 lbs and it's a booger to start but once it warms up, it runs good. |

New battery, didn't have a problem before starting. I don't think after 15 min of running that starting fluid would still make it have the governor make the carb arm move all the way forward. I can seem to control the governor or throttle because of either the carb or distributor, but admit I have wire to the control and a spring that I don't even know should be there or not by the carb. |

talked to a guy who said I might need a rebuilt governor and some are just bolted on, don't know if mine are, got the manual from YT, and it is real helpful, but didn't mention governor in the trouble shooting as I can see. I need the shaft, it is missing, but seemed to work okay before, not perfect but still! |

Here is what your linkage should look like. Seems (going back over 20 yrs) like I had a surging/reving problem that I fixed by putting the correct spring
on.
