Just bought a super major.
Fantastic tractor.
Can't believe it is 60 this year.
Condition seems generally very good.
The one big issue is the diff lock is always on.

The pedal moves up and down, but to no effect.
The pedal can be moved by hand to either position
( or somewhere in between ) quite easily, but does not spring back. Just stays where you put it.

Doesn't sound or feel like it effects any movement anywhere other than the pedal itself.

Has anyone had similar or know of any probable cause?

Many thanks,

Nick m.

Are you sure the rod the pedal pushes is going in and out? Normally the lock will come
out if you touch the brake or once the uneven load on each wheel evens up.

You may have to dismantle the brake, remove the housing and pull the bull pinion shaft
out to have a look and sort the problem. You will need to get the bearing out of the
inner housing and I would put a couple of bolts back in once you have the brake housing
off, just to hold the shims in place whilst you are getting the bull pinion shaft out.

Bull pinion shaft out of the tractor. The dif.lock is the bit on the end, it is held on to the actuating rod that goes through the bull pinion shaft with a castellated nut spring and cotter pin. I have seen these come off and give the same problem.

Thanks for that info.
I'll try to have a closer look soon at the pedal etc. Check there's nothing obvious.
I think you will be right though and I'll have to dismantle the brake and go from there.

Waiting for an operators manual to arrive at the moment, and will try to find some workshop documents on line.

Thanks,

Nick m.

There will be nothing in the operators manual to help, you need the service manual
which normally covers tractors from the Fodson Major 1952 to the New Performance Super
in 1964. They are on line in disc format.

Ok thanks, I'll have a look for them.
Wasn't sure how in depth the operators manual would go, but it'll be very handy anyway.

Very impressed with how fordson seemed to have made this tractor in a way that things are quite easy to get to and look at.

I took the flat cover off the pedal spindle (is that the right word?) today.
The small piece of metal that should be fixed to the spindle was just loose on the spindle. Ie the bolt has been removed.
The rod that should be pushed in and out seemed fine, ie I could push it in and it would spring back out.
So I've bolted it back together so that the pedal works.
Will try driving the tractor tomorrow, see if it does anything.

Strange thing though, the inside of the small flat panel I removed has been scratched and gouged.

Had to wait a long time for a 38mm socket to take rear wheel off.

But have got it to this point. See photo (hopefully).

The brake housing is off and can see the bearings.

The sprung pin that can be pushed that should activate/deactivate the diff lock can be pulled out I think with no resistance). Although I've not pulled it too far because
I'm not sure I should.

What do I do next at this point?
How do I get the pinion shaft and all out?
Anything I should do first?

Thanks for any advice.
