I bought a Allis Chalmers G just recently
and it smokes some from the engine. My
question is how do I read the smoke to
tell what the issue is in the engine? I'd
like to think I could fix the problem but
I need to know where I should start
looking. I know colors of smoke will give
signs of issues as does the smell. The
smoke I have coming out is a white gray
and has a smell of light burn oil. That
would say to me rings or lifters correct?
Any help would be great any thoughts
would be great to.

Doubt it is lifters; as it is a flat head engine.

Worn crank bearings can spew excessive oil on the cylinder walls, making it hard control.

Rings can be stuck also.

Tractor runs smooth. No issues there. This was a reserch farm tractor at Cornell university. I have very detailed records back to 72 when they bought it. I'll see if there is anything there that might give me some idea as to the smoke.

White/gray smoke - perhaps coolant getting into cylinders. Head gasket?

Probly was run hot and rings lost trnsion. No water pump and was a common problem letting fluid to get low and lose circulation. Pistons only come out the bottom so new rings can be installed by dropping the pan and pulling the pistons out and putting new rings back up in the hole. Just need a new pan gasket.
