Battery is not charging on this tractor. The alternator checks good. It was at the dealer for this problem and they found the wire going to the solenoid was loose in the terminal. Well, its has quit charging
again. There was some discussion on here about the plugs being bad in the wiring harness. Any other ideas? Thanks!

The regulator on that tractor sits behind the battery. Make sure it's in good condition and has not been hit or damaged in some way. If it looks good, separate the 4-pin connector just enough to probe the terminals with a meter or a test light. The yellow wire should have 12 volts with the key on. If not, backtrack that circuit through the cab connector and on up into the cab and keyswitch area.

The regulator looked good. I had 12 volts at the yellow wire with the switch on. Other ideas? Thanks Bern!

Put a low rpm delco one wire alternator on it. Youll have to drill out one of the mounting holes on the alternator for it to work but it eliminates the wiring issues on these aging tractors.

Find the field terminal on the alternator. Disconnect the wire. Take a jumper wire and connect one end to the B post (the big one), and the other end to the field terminal. You should see a spark when you make the connection. If you don't, you either have an open in your brush circuit, or else an open in the battery wire between the alternator and the battery.

Is there a battery temperature sensor involved in this system? Should be fitted on the battery tray.

Are you sure it's alternator problem?
As I have just remembered some years ago I had flat battery problems with our JD2040 and it turned out to be
faulty starter solenoid

I had a spark when I jumped the field wire to the battery post. I thought the gauge might me bad, but I ran the tractor for 2 hours cutting hay with the a/c running and the battery didn't charge. The battery is good. I put a test meter on the battery post and revved he motor up and had in increase in voltage.
