I have a dilemma we redid the head on our 886 d358. We got It back on but we cant find any marking on the front pulley to set it at TDC. We even looked in the flywheel housing and nothing there. the front pulley the metal arrow is there. We noticed there seems to be a material on the pulley and we were wondering if it was printed instead of engraved on the pulley. Any help is greatly appreciated

Set one cylinder on the rock then set the valves on the running mate.

yep, dont need marks to set valves. follow firing order or the simplified method,... no need for marks. for #1 cyl. on TDC get #6 in the centre of the rock.

Okay let see how this goes. What they are talking about is when number one cylinder is on TDC compression its running mate No 6 is on valve overlap meaning the exhaust valve is just closing and the intake is just opening. The link explains it more. Write down the firing order on a paper along the left edge; 1-5-3-6-2-4 then next to them write 6-2-4-1-5-3. So after you set No1 valves with 6 on overlap, turn the engine to No 2 overlap and set the valves on No 5 and so on until all 6 in the firing order have been adjusted.

To do the valve adjustment on a 358 turn engine so that #1 is at TDC then set the valves on #1 or as we say 1&2 skip # 3 then do 4&5 skip 6&7 do 8&9 . Turn engine one full turn and do #3 -6&7 -10-11-12 .

TV and if they cannot find TDC like they ..SAID.. in their post then how have you helped them? I realize I could have given them that procedure once they knew how to find TDC by valve overlap, but that was not the process in discussion.

If you want to make a new mark at exactly TDC I can tell you how to find the precise TDC, if this tractor has pencil injectors it would be real easy.

I do it this way,
1 5 3
6 2 4

When 1 has ex almost closed and in started open on overlap set 6. turn 1/3 turn to 5 overlap set 2, turn 1/3 turn to 3 overlap set 4
Turn 1/3 turn to 6 overlap set 1, turn 1/3 to 2 overlap set 5, turn 1/3 turn to 4 overlap set 3, and you are done..
Same way on four cylinders, just turn by 1/2 turn.
1 3
4 2

I was taught this way also-it was called the magic #7. What ever valve set 'rocks'-exhaust closing and intake opening, both are tight, then the opposite valve set will be ready to adjust, and it will add to that # and it will = 7 ! 1&6, 2&5, 3&4. Firing order is always 153624. Mark.

Well TDC can be found when Both intake and exhaust are LOOSE on #1 or #6 , ya can remove the timing window on the PUMP , I have never run into one that the timing marks were NOT on the flywheel and removal of the timing plate on the right side of the bell housing there SHOULD BE a POINTER . One can pull the injector on #1 and with care and a piece of SOFT wire or a long probe with a dial indicator you can get dead on . You also can loosen #1 injection line as you turn it over and look for fuel at the injector then ya can FIGURE out about where your at taken account timing advance . GESSSS Come on guys ya want to play MECHANICS then use your heads .

Thanks for all the help. We got it set. Ive never seen a tractor with no marks on the pulley either. Its odd. There are marks on the smaller part of the pulley towards the block but the arrow is all the way up top to the big part of the pulley. We. Just turned it over a few times till we got what you described with cylinder 1 then 6. We have a book on it but it gave no description on how to set TDC. Im assuming thats because it should be obvious how to do it. Weve worked on a lot of IH tractors, including a 826 that we did a injector pump on, but I ve never seen one with no time marks. Just goes to show you run across a lot different things if you work on enough of these tractors.
