Working on 51 8n my dad gave me.

I've taken the engine off to replace the crankshaft seals and see the transmission case has a pretty heavy dose of either grease or oil on the inside walls that is pretty dirty...

Any harm in cleaning it all up or is it like that for a reason??

Ditto.

Layers of funk and filth sometimes hide problems. Plus it makes parts nasty to work with. If I'm in something it gets cleaned.

That's exactly what happened.

NASTY but it's good and clean now BUT.... small crack in the upper rear.

Going to remove the shift plate to see if it goes all the way through. The transmission case if full so if it was leaking, I'm sure I'd see it with this photo.
