Hi, All,

having convinced myself that i know almost nothing about SMAW from just reading my book and my screwing around with my Lincoln AC/DC buzz box... I thought it might be time for some adult ed. I work days, so a Lincoln or Hobart 6-week school is out of the question.

Any suggestions in the Nashville-Murfreesboro area?

thanks in advance!

Bill

Check with your local community college or vocational school. Most of the ones around here have evening continuing education classes that cover most any subject.

Surprisingly hard to find! I googled Adult ed, welding classes, and a few other things. There's 30,000 five-semester programs, but not much targeted towards the hobbyist in my area.

William,

This way over the top as far as I'm concerned, but the Tennessee Technology Center in Nashville offers an evening course in Welding Technology.

The "over-the-top" part is that it is a 24 month course, meeting, I think, four nights a week.

I'd love to find a basic welding class in Middle Tennessee, but 24 months? No way.

Hi William,

The community college here (Olympia, WA) offers several such programs, but they are run through the Continuing Education Department of the college, and have their own catalog, website, and administration. You would not be able to find them by looking in the for credit catalog or website of the college. Something similar could be the case there, too.

Stan

Yes, I found that, too- 20,000 dollars and two years of nights. I think it"s great for some who"s working and wants to work up to a better job- but for hobbyist hackers like me, not so much.

The local high school voc-tech programs send students to this school; it"s not taught in the schools.

From what I understand, you just want to learn how to weld, nothing extreme. I think if it were me, I'd check the local Vocational Tech schools & talk with the instructors. I know a lot of them are kinda happy to pick up a few extra bucks in the evening and will teach you one on one, way less than a commercial school. Just my thoughts, Keith

Actually the TTCs do offer night-classes quite often. Call them up and ask.

I took a night class at my local TTC and it only lasted 10-12 weeks, meeting several times a week for a few hours....just enough to be able to get some instruction and hands-on with a torch, a TIG, MIG, and stick.

Find some one who welds for a living and pay for their time.I learned to weld by doing on a 10 buck junkyard welder. There was no money for welding courses in the 50s.I got some basic instruction from a mechanic when I worked at a John Deere dealer.
