I just bought this frontend loader tractor case 540C I have the shop manual C-202 there are no wiring diagrams. The positive lead from battery is hooked to the tractor frame and not the starter. the red wire from the Alternator was cut I re connected and it got hot and started to melt the wire. The manual says the pos lead is to ground and black to the starter??? Battery will not charge? It needs a lot of TLC but would like to restore it if possible??
Anyone got any wiring diagrams and any Idea's

99.7% of alternators are designed to be wired negative ground. You will have to have special diodes in the alternator for it to work as positive ground. If you have an alternator check very carefully before you wire it and a battery to a vehicle.

Is there a way to tell if there are diodes in the alternator I'll take some pictures and post them if I can.

Most old generator systems were pos. ground, but when you
convert them to alternators negative ground is the way it
should be wired.

All alternators have diodes. If you hooked the battery up backwards, even momentarily, you likely already smoked the diodes. Hook it up negative ground and see if it charges.

The battery was already hooked up when I bought it but there was a red wire coming from the alternator and a red coming from the cab off the volt meter which looked like they were twisted together at one time. so when I twisted them back together they sparked and got hot so I took them apart and put a wire nut on each then taped up the ends.
I will be asking tons of questions as the shop manual (C-202) does little help. I have two levers on either side of the steering wheel the one on the left is the throttle but what is the one on the right? It goes to a small box on the back of the engine or on top of the transmission? It does not move very much but it looks like it moves a plunger on this box, is that the case o matic?

I posted 3 pictures. I have the positive lead going to the starter and the negative to ground. The red wire to the alt does not get hot and melt any more and the amp/volt meter works now. Lets hope it keeps the battery charged as I had it on a charger.
