When I engage the pto on my 1720 the gears grind like all get out till I get it engaged, mostly when I use the mower . The tiller is OK when I engage it.
Just rebuilt the brakes somewhat expensive . Replaced the disks, Stators, Actuator and fluid. Was easy just expensive. Spent close to $400, but can stop going down hill better now.

You pressing the clutch?

Tiller has less inertia to over on than a rotary mower, thus less grind.

A buddies Ford 2110 Compact was doing the same. Quit after we properly adjusted the clutch

The dual stage clutch pressure plate needs adjusted and/or parts replaced in it. If it was grinding for a while you may need the gears in the rear that drive the pto also.

Get the manual and see how to adjust the clutch didn't k now it was a two stage clutch.I bought it used and have no operator manual on it . Has a override on the PTO shaft . Thought it was like a 8n . Neighbor got killed from not haveing one on a 8n, mower took him over a bank.

I can't get my head wrapped around why if I push in the clutch the PTO grinds when I engage the mower. All power to the transmission should be off and no parts moving inside.Looked at the service manual but it doesn't show the power line of travel.There would have to be some place it still turns at the clutch even when pushed all the way in.It is daylight now so I am going to look for the adjustment cover and see if it there . Don't know if I have dual clutch or single.

Double clutch means that there is two separate clutches, one foe the transmission and one for the PTO. The PTO clutch should normally engage when the clutch pedal is half way up and the transmission clutch should engage near the top of the pedal range of motion. This is also called live PTO.

Since you can stop the tractor when you push the clutch in and shift gears in the transmission without it grinding then the transmission clutch seems to be working properly, but the PTO clutch is most likely not disengaging properly, even with the pedal fully depressed.

It could be just an adjustment or it could mean that you need to split the tractor to determine what might need to be replaced.

Follow the instructions in the manual for adjusting the clutch first, and if that doesn't help then you will most likely be splitting it.

Looks like I have a single clutch, didn't find a adjustment hole.

Adjusted to what the manual call for, went for 1 inch free travel, if I push the clutch pedal all the way down, petal to the metal I can engage the PTO with the mower on and not grind gears. If I don't push all the way down the gears grind. Think I will adjust it to 3/4 inch free travel and see how that works.I have just got the mower so it wasn't an issue before. Thanks to everyone for all the input. If I had never ask about it here I would not have found out it wasn't right. The glow plugs have gone bad I believe cause it has gotten hard to start.
