Cylinder hone grit

I am replacing the piston rings in my Allis Chalmers Model C tractor with standard Hastings rings. And I was hoping for some instructions included with the rings as far as what grit hone to use to remove the polish on the cylinder sleeves, but there were no instructions included with the piston rings. Does anybody know what grit hone I should use?....thanks.

Frenchy,Generally,120,180 or 280 grit stones are used and are considered standard grit size.

Also make sure after you hone the cylinders wash them good soapy water and then oil them up well.

You might want to set a new ring down in square and check the end gap before going to far. If you have a wide gap you might be disappointed when you get done. You might be fine with standard rings. Not many will though. I bought a B a few years back that had been overhauled with standard rings and it blew oil out the breather from the blow by. When I took it apart the ring gap was over 1/4 inch.

Frenchy,Here is some good info for you to follow on ring fit and worn ring lands.Like J. Schwiebert said clean clean clean,and check the end gaps square in the bore,top,half way and bottom.

What is MORE important is the liquid you use to flush the cuttings away from the stones..

I use a mix of 1/4 ATF and 3/4 Diesel..

Hone until you have the wear marks honed out at both the TOP and the Bottom of the Bores...finish, leaving a nice 45 degree cross-hatch..

I tend to use finer stones after most of the Honing is done..

There may be times you will hone each cylinder for 45 minutes to get the Glaze and wear marks out..

Don't worry, it takes a LOT of Honing to remove .001".. just try to Hone equally from top to bottom...
