I am looking at picking up a Allis Chalmers model 500 hay conditioner. I am not real familiar with this piece of equipment. I am needing something to crush the steps on our heavy clover to get them to dry down for hay.

Is there anything I should watch out for on these?

Are the rollers both metal? They look like they are from the pics but I havent seen it in person yet.

Do they do a good job of crimping the hay?

Are parts available for them?

Is the roller gap adjustable?

I know its a lot of questions. I have just not been able to find any of this info through google searches.

thanks

A friend of mine has or had one of those and parts can be hard ot find for them and cost a lot. If I where you I'd look for a New Holland one since at least in my area they are very common and parts are easy to find

Don't see hardly any of these around where I'm from. I'm trying to get it for $200

Did they do a good job of conditioning the hay?

WE use to rent one from the dealer, and it worked great on sweet clover, [ yellow blossum ]we put up at least 80 acres every year, Get it fixed you will like it, and so will the cattle, like that clover. One year we ground some of that clover hay with a little oats added, nice and green, they would knock u over for it!

It did do a good job when we could keep it working but had problems with the belts ad some other such thing but then again it was old and came out of a fence row.

I was in high school when we use to rent one, cant remember for sure,at least i never had to tighten them, but apparently you can adjust the two roller's together, because you could hear it pound back there if the swath was bunchy. It always feed thru there too, never plugged it.

Glockky,

I have the Operating Instructions for the Model 500 Hay Conditioner (Ser. #7101 and up)

P.M. me with your address and I'll mail it to you.

I breezed through it today for the first time and happened to see an important note on page 10.

"NOTE: Before stopping operation of unit, depress engine clutch of tractor and place PTO in neutral before throttling down engine. If engine is throttled down before depressing engine clutch a tremendous load is transferred to drive chain."
