Probably the bottom end of the gearshift handle needs to be built up and honed off.

Do they make a sloppy shifter fix kit for the 656, which has the side console shifter? I thought they only made them for the tractors with the stick on the deck.

The pin on the end of the horizontal shaft comes loose and or wears out. The divider block wears out and the spring detent for neutral wears out. Several pivot linkages wear out. It is a pain in the neck to replace those parts under the hydraulic flow divider valves but can be done. Newest shaft has square pin, separate dividers where original had round pin and cast divider block. Old style, you cannot pull horizontal shaft without knocking pin out of the end. Replacement shaft, you made a slot in outer casting so you can leave pin in place and slide shaft in. Was a kit, expensive as heck, don't know if still available.
