We removed one of the pistons from the 400 (41/8"), Found out they were M&W. Question Is
right above the top ring there is grove that goes all around the piston smaller than the
ring grove. I have never seen that before could someone tell me what is for. Thank you.

It is called a heat dam, it provides a slightly longer path of heat transfer to the lower piston and the rings. Jim

Just in case you didn't know, the tractor would have originally had 4" pistons. 4 1/8" is the overbore which I am sure almost all Super M's - 400's have them by now.
4 1/8" is standard bore for 450.
