my 1989 craftsman 2 has let me down. when I hit the key the solenoid thunks. not really a click more like snapping your fingers. battery is good. I replaced solenoid and new one does the same thing.

any ideas out there ???

Jab an old screwdriver between the large posts on the solenoid to bypass it and put battery power direct to the starter and see what happens.

Could be a failed starter or a engine grounding issue.

Also, can you turn the engine over normally by hand, thereby ruling out a starter drive jammed into the flywheel ring gear?

I tried jumping to starter with a battery pak. no good. will try the screw driver trick next. don't know yet about turning over eng. I have retired for the day. frustrated.

Which engine does it have?

Briggs opposed twin cylinder or a Kohler?
