WC transmision noise

When WC is running transmission makes a lot of noise. As soon as clutch is pushed in noise stops. This is when tractor is setting still. It also is that way when driving tractor. Is bearing in transmission bad?

Probably the lower countershaft roller gearings. Too many years of sitting outside with a bad rubber boot on the gearshift allowing rainwater to enter.

Have you tried draining the old oil and then refilling with new oil like say the 85W-140 and see if the noise goes away or is not as bad??

Tractor has spent about all of its life in a machine shed. It was out only when being used in field or when field work wasn't complete. My uncle had this tractor, then his son. I bought it from my cousins wife. It spent all its time in shed or garage. I did change oil in transmission, but I only used 90 w oil. Thanks for all your help.

90W oil will work just fine. I like the newer 85W-140 due to it being an oil that stays thicker when hot. Are you sure you have enough in it that can make a difference when it comes to noise. Also when you change the oil did you notice any water in it??

The only things turning when sitting in neutral are the input shaft and drive gear and the counter shaft in the bottom. If it has been run low on oil, which is common in tractors with a PTO it could be the input shaft gear or front counter shaft gear or the counter shaft bearings. It dissembles pretty easily. Never seen thicker oil do a whole lot in such cases but doesn't cost much to try it. We run 85-140 in ours with a heavy dose of STP and although not quiet, it toned the noise down enough for my liking no more than it gets used.

Don't know if tractor was run much with low oil. When I got the tractor PTO was leaking oil on floor, I drained oil and put new seals in PTO. I have had it at a couple shows and it makes a lot of noise. I didn't know what bearings I would have to replace to quiet it down. I know when I was young it didn't make that much noise. Thanks for your help.

Since it does not have hyds you might try this old trick. Add some graphite to the oil. Say a 1/4 cup or so of it. Will not hurt a thing but may help a lot. Done this many times over the years to old transmission in cars and truck and rear ends to help them work better and even cheaper
