Hi All,

I've pulled out my failed electronic ignition and went back to the original points this morning.

Strange thing now, is that when I press the starter button, the starter keeps turning and never stops until I kill it with the key. The engine never turns over,
but the starter just keeps on going....

Has anyone seen this happen?

Happened once in an 8N. Low battery - Charged it and problem resolved.

Starter not turning the engine reinforces my suspicion that a weak or low battery is causing your trouble.

What tractor do you have? It seems to me, if you release the starter button, whether it's mechanical or a solenoid, the starter should stop. Otherwise the solenoid or wiring is bad.

Would need to know what tractor and how it's wired. Prior to the
x01 series, turning off the key wouldn't stop it with the original wiring.

Low battery can cause the solenoid to stick and the starter to keep
turning. I've had that happen quite a few times, but I don't see how
turning the key off would stop that either. Tapping the solenoid
with a screwdriver handle will usually unstick it so it will stop.

he's working on a 641. If y'all'd search his previous posts, you'd know this! Laughing

"he's working on a 641. If y'all'd search his previous posts, you'd know this!"

We'd also know if he mentioned it and we wouldn't have to search. Razz
Even then, I'm not sure why the key would shut it off IF the contacts stuck.
That makes me think it may be a different issue or different wiring.

Regardless of what some others might do, I for one do not keep a tab on what everyone who posts has and is working on so, it is important to put that info in your post regardless if you mentioned it a hundred times before in previous posts. Another good reason is that when these posts get saved in the archives, if '641' isn't in the subject or text matter, it will never get seen if someone else has a similar problem later on and tries to archive search it. Follow? So, why has the EI failed on your Ford 641? What was it (6V or 12V) before you tried to install the EI? Did it run then? Almost 100% of all electrical issues are due to mucked up wiring regardless if 6V/POS GRN; 12V/NEG GRN; and/or if EI was added. There are but a handful of correct ways to wire a 12V conversion system, one or two correct ways to wire a 6V system, and a thousand ways to incorrectly wire either. When you added EI, was it for a 6V or a 12V system and which setup did you have? One huge mistake many fellas make is, when they have non-starting issues with the OEM 6V system, they incorrectly assume they need to switch to 12V and/or add an EI setup. If it ain't running on 6V why do you think it will on 12V??? Or, if it ain't running on 12V why do you think adding EI will fix the problem??? There's just no logic in this way of thinking. Here is the OEM Wiring Diagram for the 600/800 Model Tractors taken directly from the Operator's Manual. I'd start by disconnecting lights, and verifying the entire wiring system is correct for 6V/POS GRN first since you say that is where you are at now. You may surprise yourself on what you discover.

This wiring diagram should help to confirm if wired correctly:
