|
|
My first machinery project was to
rebuild my disc. It was in pretty bad
shape as all the discs on the front
were broken, some bearings were out,
and there were some breaks that needed
welding. The bearing holders were
cracked and some of the frame was also
cracked, but only on the rear gangs. I
thought that was unusual because the
front takes the worst of the hits. You
can see in these pics the blades were
all at least cracked and lost we're
broken. Lol
The bearing mounts we're cracked up
too, so they got welded and an extra
brace.
I managed to break the hitch too, that was from pulling sideways on it, that's what happens when your careless. So that had to come apart for welding. The engineer who designed that hitch got a piece of my mind. Lol, for what good that did.
You can see it had been partially broken at least twice before. There isn't room to plate the sides and top, and I didn't have anything good to add to the bottom, and only one piece broke, so I just welded it with 7018. Hopefully it will hold.
So got it all together and ready to go.
The next project is going to be the corn planter. That's going to be a lot bigger job as there are lots of parts rusted solid, there is even a tree to get out. But I think I'll have enough parts from the 3 that I have to get it going. I am going to need fertilizer augers tho, so if someone has some I could use a good pair. They can be from any brand, I'll just adapt them. |

Forgot to add that it was sure nice working in the shop with the heater blowing on me since it was -15 this morning. I wouldn't have been working on anything in my old shop. Lol |

Jon, where did you get the blades? Was it from that local salvage yard? I do need 4 left 4 right scrapers if you have any spares |

I got them from Larson imp in Cambridge, they are old stock and they have a bunch of them, they must be 30 years old. I don't have any spares of the scrapers, but Larson's does, but everything is covered in snow now. If you wait till it warms some and they can find them they will ship them to you. Or I can go get them and ship them if needed. |

You did great on the disc Jon, I was thinking you were a hell of a lot tougher than I. Our temps have been dang cold, was wondering how you got the disc fixed so darn fast seeing you had a unheated work area. Bet the heater felt really good, Rod. |

I was going to ask what kind of heat you have.

Jon, the reason the front risers don't break is because the disc gangs butt against each other, so very little side thrust. The rear gangs are pulling apart and stress those uprights where they bolt to frame. Your gussets should solve the problem.
I see that you figured out the scraper dilemma.
Looks good

The augers from Case have a taller ridge than most other brands. It would require a faster speed to use small ridged augers. I'm not at home but may have augers and the angle iron piece over the top of the augers. Some time next week if they aren't covered with all the snow we have got lately. |

That would be awesome! I know they have a deaper auger and was thinking the new ones they sell that are high output would be similar. But originals would save me the trouble of converting them. |

Where did you get bearings for your S A disc. I have a 10? disc I would like to repair. I will need to replace or repair the bearing retainers and the parts the retainers float in. |

Got the bearings from Larson Imp too,but they are slightly different, they are 1/4" narrower. They fit the casting and shaft tho. |
