I have a Ford 650, When going down a small hill in 3rd gear I heard a banging noise, when I put the tractor in reverse the banging got worse and the tractor wouldn't move. The noise seems to be coming from the axle, but it was hard to tell while sitting on the tractor. Any suggestions?

Was the tractor able to move or make noise when
put into the other gears?

It goes fine in other gears. It did make noise going downhill, but not up.

I'm still guessing broken axle. Sometimes they drive one direction and snap end over end the other. That would account for both your downhill scenario as well as lack of reverse.

I'm probably way off base here but, I thought third and reverse gears were coupled together on the countershaft in the 5 speed. I wonder if some how this could be related, especially since you don't seem to have reverse gear now and it does fine in the others.

3rd & reverse ARE the topmost 2 gears on a 5 speed's shifting tower.....

3-R

1-2

4-5

Don't think he said that, did he? It's not going fine in others if it's popping on a downhill run.

Remove rear end fill plug have some one try backing up while you look with a flashlight to see if the ring gear is turning.
