I bought a toy John Deere 40 Crawler. I think it is a 1956 Ertl original, but I am trying to make sure. I have several tractors from that period. How can I identify this crawler for certain. I have checked books, ebay, and other sources. Are there any marks. It looks authentic except it has "40" decals on the hood. I do not see that in other sources. It has a blade.

Is it the green or the yellow one? Green was from 1954, yellow 1956, both with blades.

Then in 1999 there was 3 more versions made. One green one yellow with no blades, and one labeled 19th Annual Plow Show green with a blade.

So I am guessing yours is an original if it has a blade.

IaGary, It is green with a blade. I have the book, International Directory of Model Farm Tractors & Implements and it looks identical to the 1954. It is dusty and never been painted. The only difference is, it has "40" decals and the book picture does not. My Ertl tractors of the 1950's have "made in the USA." There is no names or marks that I can find.

I'm not sure these are what you're referring to but I'll add this picture. Back when I was a kid I went to the John Deere dealer and told the salesman I wanted to buy "that caterpillar". He had fun teasing me, it's NOT a Caterpillar. Anyhow the old original is a little bigger than the newer one with a blade and a tiny MC decal. Decals are gone from the old one.

Mine is just like the older one except it has the blade and "40" decal that looks original. Does yours have a name or brand on it?

I looked at it with a large magnifying glass and don't see anything other than what's left of "John Deere" on one side.
