Timing is retarded and backfires through exhaust. How do I adjust for more advance? Is it done on the mag coupler,or loosen 2 bolts on the shaft
housing ?

The original magneto had a lever on the back of the mag to advance or retard the timing.

As stated below the original mag had a lever to retard timing during starting.Make sure the flex coupling is in good shape and not worn out.The coupling drive is adjustable.The operators manual shows how to adjust the drive coupling for timing.My advice is to make sure you have the correct mag on it and adjusted right to prevent a broken wrist or shoulder during hand cranking.

The magneto has just been rebuilt and some internals were replaced and I think this changed the original timing setting. I am aware of the retard lever. I just need to know how to reset to stock specs, after #1 on tdc. My operators manual does not cover this.

There is a plug on the side of the bell housing. Behind the plug is a mark on the flywheel. Set the timing so mag fires when you can see the mark in the plug hole.

Something I usually do with Case engines in find the flywheel mark. Not easy with oil clutch. At this point fabricate a pointer and bolt to front timing gear cover. With mark in place in plug hole now take a chisel and make a significant notch on front pulley. I paint this mark with contrasting color paint.

The timing is adjusted by loosening the large jam nut on the driveshaft enough to rotate the splined drive hub. There are are typically a couple tabs bent down on the flat of the nut that you need to bend up to loosen the nut. I don't have pics available, and it's been a few years since I've done it, but if you look at it, I think you will see what I am referring to
