450C left steering brake does not work in reverse. In forward, it's ok. The brake had been locked on...not the levere that actuates the steering clutch, just the mechanism that actuates the brake band. I'm guessing the brake band has worn and is the problem.

Can anyone tell me

How do I inspect the brake band?

How is a brake band replaced?

Ihave a technical manual but it does not explain this.

Thanks

Brake band is self-adjusting unless someone has disabled it. C series was the first to have it. Have you tried checking the initial "size"
adjustment?

As far as removal goes? At least with the 450C, the final drive does have to taken off, unlike the 350C. Pull one shaft out of the final
drive. Get a bunch of other stuff out of the way on top. Then the clutch pack and brake-band lifts out the top.

It is in an oil bath (wet steering clutches) so it would be hard to see anything if you don't remove it.

If you have John Deere technical manual TM1102 for a 450C I am surprised somewhere in it; it doesn t have the procedures to do steering clutches/brakes with or without removing the final drive. I know the 450B manual has it as does the 450E manual. In the 450B manual it is in the general section at the front of the manual in the separation group, I would expect similar information in the 450C manual. You can find a free copy of the 450B manual at https://archive.org/details/John_Deere_Company (third one in the top row. You can save a copy to your computer if you want it for reference.

Thanks. I'm still trying to understand how to inspect the brake band.

To actually inspect it you will need to remove it.
