Bought a ford 3000 diesel 8 speed transmission that does not have live pto. Was wondering can I put live pto in it or is the transmission different

It would take a lot of parts and labor. The non-live PTO tractor has a single clutch and the PTO shaft is driven off of a counter shaft driven by the transmission itself. The live PTO needs a double clutch and a different input shaft assembly on the transmission that transfers the power from the two different clutch discs to two different shafts inside the transmission, and then the PTO itself is driven off of the second clutch disc.

It would be cheaper and easier to find an 8 speed with live PTO from a tractor with a blown engine and swap the whole trans, including the flywheel and clutch to your tractor, or find a good tractor that has live PTO and buy that one and sell yours.

Make sure that you get an Over Running Clutch on the PTO if it doesn't already have one. That will keep a heavy implement from continuing to push the tractor forward when you push in the clutch and put on the brakes.

It may have live pto but clutch may not be adjusted correctly. Have seen this a few times over the years. Of course posting numbers off foil sticker or off machined surface to rear of starter will tell the real story.

nashranch, yours was build Dec 16, 1965 in Basildon, England
Unfortunately the middle row is the model ID numbers that tell what it has.

As Ultradog has said, from that model number that's a transmission driven (non-live) PTO.

nashranch, it looks like there's another 4 off to the left of that 46 or 4C. Try a pencil rubbing on a piece of paper to see if you can bring up hose missing numbers.

46 makes no sense as part of a 1965 3000 model number, and nether does 4C, but 4C does make sense at the end of a 4000 series model number as the 4 would mean independent 540 rpm PTO and the C would mean an 8 speed transmission. A 3000 with an 8 speed was only available with live or non-live PTO, never Independent PTO. So maybe the transmission was swapped out at some point?
