A friend's D15 needs adjustment on his Power Director. I've never done the procedure but the parts and service manuals both seem to suggest that it can be reshimmed through the side cover without splitting the tractor. It looks like the shims slide in and out without breaking the PD clutch apart. Can someone confirm that as the mechanic he hired believes it has to be split to adjust it and I'd like to head that off if possible.

All adjustments to the Power Director clutch can be done thru the cover, YES. The important question (or comment) is WHY do they think it needs to be adjusted or shimmed ?????? Changing shims is to make up for actual wear on the clutch. Wear from lots of years of slipping the clutch on a Roto-baler for example. Changing shims does not and will not repair a clutch that the handle jumps out of gear into neutral !!!!! So, without any further comments, why do they think shimming it is a good idea ?? And, to do the job right, you have to BUY new shims and remove old shims, not just move them around.

It was maybe a year ago that he told me he was having a problem and I believe it was that he had to keep the PTO engaged to keep it from slipping (it's been awhile and the conversation was over the phone though I think I asked about it on here). I suggested he might adjust it after looking at the manual. He just contacted me and said he'd hired someone to do it since it's down for the winter.

The mechanic is just a fellow who likes to work on tractors, so I'd doubt he's worked on an AC before. I just wanted to make sure they didn't split it if they didn't need to.

I don"t understand the comment about keeping the pto engaged to keep (the PD) from slipping. Don"t see how that would help. IIRC, the service manual talks about critical measurements that must be maintained in the clutch assembly, and shims can be removed from one half and inserted in the other half to maintain that measurement. However, if the clutch is slipping it"s due to wear on the plates.
