So taking apart the steering gear box to adjust & hopefully fix loose play in the steering column, I discovered a couple of things.

First, there were some loose parts in the bottom of the transmission case, behind where the pressure plate is, and directly under where the steering box is. Can anyone tell what these are, what they're for (I made these pictures rather large because the parts are hard to see...hope it's not a problem)?

And also, when taking apart the steering gear, one of the sectors has a broken tooth on it:

Should I replace this?

Cheers!

those look like old starter bendix parts, they are pretty much standard equipment in the bellhousing of all old 8n's, they drop in there and ride along for years untill somebody takes the tractor apart and removes them, if the steering was working its your choise on the sector, still... as long as you do have it apart, and as long as the part is available...its your call

Those are just parts from an old starter bendix that went bad and didn't get removed. Many old N's are running around wif more than those parts still in 'em. If the gear is broken and ye can get a replacement fer it, and ye got the bad one out already, I think it makes sense to replace it, don't you? Most of the work is already done. Your call though.

I just got an early left sector shaft from this guy on ebay.
He didn't have one listed so I emailed him and asked.
He had one and sold it to me. He has lots of other parts too.
He may still have the right side sector shaft if that is the one you need.

Russ, I did say "if" 3 times, didn't I? Also if not available just put the old one back in if it is still working.

Would it be possible, (for the steering gear), to weld that up and grind it back to the correct profile?
I am not sure of what you can and can't weld due to heat treatments? Just a possible idea.
