I have a JD 1530 that was inherited. It had a 48 series FEL [front end loader], but has never worked.
I am trying to get it functional before hay season arrives in TN.
Currently the 3pt works great no matter how heavy the attachment is. When I connect the lines to the FEL (supply line tees into line after the pressure control valve, return is plumbed into transmission housing top right above ankle.) The FEL shutters to raise and if any attachment is on the 3pt it fails to raise unless I max out a cylinder on the FEL (bucket or arms).
I also have a ported filter cover coming next week to see if this helps any at all. Just having a hard time processing what could be causing the 3pt issues after the FEL is attached.

Problem may be in loader cylinder
bypassing internally. Or not.

I took the 2 stick control valve off and to the local hydraulic shop the tested it and said no problems, but I haven't had the cylinders checked.

Humor me here. What happens if you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left or the right and hold it there while you try to use the loader? My 1020 acted up one time, the loader wouldn't function. If I turned all the way to the right and held it, the loader worked. One of the power steering spools was bad and leaking by.

Welcome to YT
I'll venture to guess if model 48 loader has the convertible valve that was offered when loader was new that the inner seal on closed center conversion plug has failed. Simple test is remove FEL valve return hose from tractor & with both FEL hyd control levers in neutral aim open hose in hyd filler hole start engine & no oil should exit hose. If oil exits hose either seal I referred to has failed or spool to valve housing clearance is too much.

Have you confirmed the loader control valve is a closed center valve?

I will try the power steering test, return line test Friday or Saturday when I get home. As far as confirming if the valve is closed center I am not sure how to check.

Tx Jim's test is the starting point. Report your findings.

With the engine operating but no loader valve leavers pulled or pushed. There should be no oil flowing in through the valve and back to the tractor .
If oil is flowing it will totally mess up hydraulic operation.
Given how the loader installer messed up the oil return into the transmission case instead of into a ported filter cover. They probably did not understand that a set of closed center loader valves are required.

The 48 manual actually shows to return the fluid to the top of case, but in all the forums it seems the filter cover improves function

Deere engineers and managers were pretty quick to realize that returning hydraulic oil from high flow loads directly into the transmission case. This caused problems starving the front pump. The transmission pump can not keep up with the flow demands to keep the front pump supplied.
Thus the release and recommendation of the ported filter cover to return high flow hydraulic loads. Such as loaders, log splitters, backhoes, hydraulic motors, hydraulic posthole diggers etc.
I remember the 2020 with the 48 loader was a whole new machine when the ported filter cover update was completed.

I recieved the T31170 filter cover today. What are the port threads? I need to convert down to 1/2" NPT for my return line

I agree JD engineers originally recommended attaching FEL control valve return line to dump oil back to trans case. Back when those tractors were new when I installed FEL I attached return line similar to your photo following JD installation instructions.

Granted the engineers decided a ported filter for return oil yielded better hyd performance especially when higher GPM oil flow was required such as operation of an orbit motor.

Fluid comes out the return with tractor on and levers in neutral position. Looks like I'm set up on open center....
